BPF backs Shelter calls
The British Property Federation (BPF) has joined housing charity Shelter in asking the government for more money to tackle "rogue landlords".
It is supporting Shelter in its drive to improve the standards of rented homes comes after a report by Dr Julie Rugg of York University found many on low incomes are living in "slum-like" conditions.
Senior officials at the BPF are now hoping Dr Rugg's review of the sector will mean a "wide-ranging look at the future of rental".
Ian Fletcher, director for residential property at the federation, said the organisation wants everyone entering the rented market to have access to a decent home and is fully behind Shelter's campaign to condemn the "poor housing conditions of the minority of landlords".
He added: "We would like to see housing, planning, benefit and tax policy all reinforcing a drive to expunge the sector of its rogue element."
Meanwhile, the BPF has also warned that the property industry could face a "flooding fiasco" if the government does not shore up defences.
Property Week reports the federation also claimed there could be chaos if insurance companies withdraw cover for commercial properties in high-risk areas.
