Buy-to-let industry bodies 'criticise tenant shaming'
Landlords who publicly humiliate tenants unable to pay their rent have been condemned by the National Landlords Association (NLA) and the Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA), it has been revealed.
The statement comes in response to media coverage of a letting agent who has started erecting signs on the properties of tenants who have failed to pay their rent.
Ian Potter, head of operations for ARLA, said: "This is almost certainly an illegal activity, contravening data protection and planning laws.
"Apart from that, what do the agent and landlord expect to achieve, and how do they think they will appear to the majority of people in the street?"
He added that letting agents who encourage landlords to take this sort of action should be avoided and the behaviour is damaging to the relationship between letting agents, landlords and tenants.
Last week the NLA announced it is committed to raising standards in the sale and rent back sector.
