Buy to let insurance policyholders 'must deliver what students want'
Posted by Dan Winters
According to new statistics, 88 per cent of all university students in the UK are living in privately rented accommodation, providing a considerable market for Britain's buy to let insurance policyholders.
A recent survey by student housing service Accommodationforstudents.com, however, suggests that modern day students are looking for much greater luxury in their lodgings than the historic image of poorly maintained 'digs'.
Simon Thompson, managing director of the firm, told Residential Landlord that house-sharing students are looking for spacious living areas that are both affordable and tastefully decorated.
He said: "Most students are living away from home for the first time and so sharing with their friends is a real buzz. Properties that sleep three or more students tend to be the most popular across the UK for this reason."
The findings also saw 62 per cent of students admitting to being 'extremely picky' while house hunting, with disastrous decor and small bedrooms being among the things participants disliked most about properties they have seen.
Recent figures from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors have shown that outstripped supply of private rental property is pushing rents higher, pointing to further revival of the market, which could be good news for landlords.
