Buy to let insurance policyholders warned to clean up their act
Posted by Dan Winters
Buy to let insurance policyholders have been urged by a cleaning firm to ensure that properties are kept clean over the summer to prevent fires being caused by dangerously dirty cookers.
Landlordzone.co.uk has reported that the lives of students in private rented accommodation could be at risk if careless landlords leave kitchen grime to fester over the summer break.
Rik Hellewell, from oven valeting franchise Ovenu, told the website that kitchens receive regular deep cleans to reduce the risk of accidental fires, of which 55 per cent in 2009, 23,815 separate incidents, were caused by cooking appliances.
He said: "The facts are there, the number of fires caused by ovens should be a major warning to landlords that an unclean cooker can lead to serious injury or even death."
Mr Hellewell added that the build-up of grease inside an oven can have "far greater consequences" than dirty floors or work surfaces.
Earlier this month, research by the Energy Saving Trust revealed that many UK landlords are choosing to make energy-efficient improvements to their properties in a bit to meet demand for more eco-friendly homes.
