Buy to let insurance: Students 'warned about unscrupulous landlords'
Posted by Dan Winters
The Deposit Protection Service (DPS) and the National Union of Students (NUS) have warned university students to be cautious of unfair buy to let property insurance policyholders.
LandlordZONE.co.uk reported that, as the end of the academic year approaches, many students will be searching for new accommodation for the start of the new term in September.
To coincide with this, the website said, the DPS has produced a new tenant's guide to give students sound advice about moving into their first private rental property.
Kevin Firth, director of the group, said: "Going away to university should be an exciting time for most students and putting in the time up front to make sure their deposit is correctly protected will mean theres less chance of hassle in the long run."
He added that, while there are still too many rogue landlords not registering their tenants' deposits, the new guide will ensure that students are fully aware of their rights and their landlords' obligations.
The DPS is currently holding more than 575,000 tenants' deposits, equating to more than £420 million.
