Campaign launched to protect tenants from repossession

Campaigners are calling for better protection for tenants whose landlords' property has been repossessed.
Shelter, Citizens Advice, Crisis and the Chartered Institute of Housing are recommending the government to change the law so that tenants have time to find other rented accommodation before the property is seized.
They have written to MPs urging them to sign an early day motion to deal with the problem, as they estimate that thousands of occupants in the private sector could be at risk of losing their homes in this way.
Simon Gordon, head of communications at the National Landlords Association, backed the campaign, but stressed that the majority of buy-to-let owners only have trouble paying their mortgage if tenants fail to pay their rent.
"Our latest research shows that 37 per cent of landlords are currently experiencing some form of rental arrears. This is bound to have an impact on the level of repossessions," he asserted.
