Energy saving 'economically rather than environmentally motivated'
Homeowners are more concerned about saving money than the planet, according to an expert.
Peter Bolton King, chief executive of the National Association of Estate Agents, says people are becoming more conscious of how much it is costing them to heat and light their properties.
He claims this is similar to car owners driving less and more slowly when they do use their vehicles in order to cut fuel costs.
Mr Bolton King says peoples' attitudes to fuel efficiency may change gradually as they find out how money can be saved.
He adds: "I think once we get into the habit of doing something it will have a knock-on effect [on the environment] in the medium to long-term."
According to energysavingsecrets.co.uk, the government has set aside money to achieve better energy efficiency in homes through the Low Carbon Buildings Programme.
It forms part of its commitment to make all homes carbon neutral by 2016, with an additional £6 million put aside to make grants available to people looking to install a micro-energy generation system in their home.
