EU awards UK £127m in flooding aid
The European Union (EU) Solidarity Fund has awarded the UK £127 million as the country responds to last summer's floods, the worst seen in England and Wales for 60 years.
Regions such as Berkshire, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire, Yorkshire and South Wales were hit by severe floods during June and July 2007, damaging residential and commercial properties.
The £127 million aid package is set to be allocated to restoring roads, schools and water infrastructure and securing dams.
John Healey, floods recovery minister, told the European Commissioner for Regional Policy Danuta Hubner that the full amount will be used on emergency operations.
Ms Hubner replied: "I am grateful to Mr Healey for confirming that the full £127 million will go into eligible operations.
"The UK can of course use the grant retroactively for operations it launched from the very beginning of the floods."
It was revealed recently that around 4,700 people are still living in temporary accommodation following last year's floods.
