Govt plans 'will make shared housing costly for buy to let insurance holders'

A body representing buy to let insurance policyholders has condemned the government's plans to make planning permission compulsory for new shared housing.
Under the proposals outlined by housing and planning minister John Healey, permission will be required for homes where three or more unrelated people live together.
The National Landlords Association (NLA) has criticised the plans, saying that they will make it more costly for buy to let insurance policyholders to provide much-needed rental accommodation.
This will lead to reduced choice for tenants and increase pressure on local authority housing lists, according to the NLA.
"The government has bowed to a small minority who shouted the loudest. It has ignored the vital role these homes play in contributing to vibrant and mixed communities," said David Salusbury, chairman of the organisation.
Meanwhile, James Davis, chief executive of upad.co.uk, has commented that 2010 will be a good year for buy to let insurance policyholders as there are plenty of opportunities to purchase property.
