Hips will make us 'much greener'
Home Information Packs (Hips) will make us more aware of the energy costs of running our homes, the director general of the Association of Hip Providers has said.
Mike Ockenden criticised the Conservative standpoint that they will be an expensive burden, defending the inclusion of Energy Performance Certificates in the packs as a cheap way of increasing awareness and improving efficiency.
"We should all look at the information that the Hips provide as a good first step on the way to us become more energy conscious," said Mr Ockenden.
He continued that the Energy Performance Certificates are a huge benefit to homebuyers, saying of Conservative opposition: "What do they think they are going to do if it is not included in the Hip?"
"A home condition report costs from £250 to £300 for each house, just to do on their own," he continued. "As part of a pack, they are a fraction of that cost because they are part of the work the home inspectors are doing on the conditions of the property."
Hips which will become mandatory from June 2007 have been criticised for potentially introducing extra costs into property trading and increasing the risk of a market slow-down. The cost of obtaining a pack will rest with the vendor.
