Importance of landlords buy to let insurance emphasised by conviction
The need for adequate landlords buy to let insurance has been emphasised after a tenant in the North-East was jailed for damage done to a rented property.
In a scene which will be the stuff of nightmares for property owners, a house in Stockton was discovered to be left in an inhabitable state after extensive damage was done. Police discovered the state of the house when looking for a suspected burglar.
The damage is estimated to have cost around £10,000 and was detailed at length when the burglar (also the tenant) appeared in court to face charges. Teesside Crown Court heard that radiators had been stacked up in the kitchen, cupboards and a boiler had been pulled from walls and an entire bathroom suite torn out.
Rebecca Brown, prosecuting, described the property as being in "a state of total disrepair" and "completely wrecked and uninhabitable".
The tenant was jailed for 12 months in total by the court.
