Landlords urged to 'keep up with repairs'
Landlords are being urged to respond to home improvement notices after a proprietor in Peterborough was fined £870.
Maroof Hussain, of Windmill Street, Millfield, was told to make repairs to his property following inspections by housing enforcement officer Peter Bezant, but failed to carry them out.
He was fined £435 for failing to comply with the notices and also had to pay costs of £375 to Peterborough city council and a victim surcharge of £15.
Mr Bezant said he was pleased with the magistrates court ruling.
"We hope that this will send a clear message to all landlords operating in the city about their responsibilities to maintain their properties and the penalties if they do not comply," he added.
Last week, landlordzone.co.uk welcomed the government's deposit protection scheme, saying it will have a positive effect on the relationship between landlords and tenants because it takes the deposit out of proprietors' hands.
