Lib Dems home in on climate change

Significant energy saving measures could be implemented in British homes, the Liberal Democrats believe.
According to the party, with a quarter of carbon emissions being created in UK homes, reducing the carbon footprint of consumers will be a crucial step towards the UK meeting its future target.
Remunerating energy companies which encourage their customers to adopt energy saving measures, extending the uptake of so-called 'green mortgages' and creating more stringent laws for residential homes have all been proposed.
Chris Huhne, the Liberal Democrats environment spokesperson, said that while many Britons were experiencing fuel poverty, they could also not afford to make them more energy efficient.
"Building new homes to tough, rigorously enforced standards, would significantly cut fuel bills and effectively pay for itself, making homes more affordable for first time buyers," he added.
The government has committed itself to the task of reducing carbon emissions by 60 per cent by 2050.
