Number of factors 'are affecting pub insurance cover owners'
Written by Dan Winters
Pub insurance cover owners are being affected by a number of issues that are combining to impact on their performance, an expert asserts.
James Wilmore, deputy news editor at The Publican, says that a "perfect storm" has hit the industry, with tax rises, aggressive supermarket pricing and the recession leading to large numbers of them shutting.
"Some in the industry also blame closures on the smoking ban and the relationship between pub companies and their tenants," he explains.
This affect on pub insurance cover owners has led to the shutting of many of these establishments and the loss of 24,000 jobs in the sector to date.
He suggests that the vast majority of pub insurance cover owners provide a controlled drinking environment for their customers, as well as community cohesion and a hub for social interaction.
Recent figures published by the British Beer and Pub Association show that up to 52 of these establishments are closing every week, with more than 2,377 shutting in the last 12 months.
