Portuguese property boosted by transport investments
Recent years have seen the Portuguese government sink money into airport expansion projects and widespread road building to ease travel routes for holidaymakers.
Faro airport has added new carousels and been extended to add space to deal with more European flights, while the capital Lisbon's main airport Portula is in the process of a renovation to boost capacity by 50 per cent.
Such improvements are set to see more flights and hence more holidaymakers head to the Iberian Peninsula, which could boost rental incomes for property owners or investors in the country.
But away from the airports, further investment has been made into the motorway network to cope with these expected higher tourist numbers.
An extension to the A22 motorway was completed in 2003 which property organisation Oceanico Group said had "helped access to the western end of the Algarve".
The group's spokeswoman Nikki Loder said: "Previously, journeys from Faro airport to Lagos and beyond could take upwards of 2.5 hours, but with the motorway now running directly to Lagos, the western Algarve can be reached within an hour of the airport."
She added that both the government and private companies have funded further road improvements across the country "to take account of the increased traffic levels".
