Retail insurance: 12% of town centre shops vacant
Written by Dan Winters
Retail insurance holders could be concerned by new figures suggesting 12 per cent of town centre shops are currently vacant.
A report published by the British Retail Consortium (BRC) has found that the number of empty stores has increased by more than three times since last autumn.
Alex Gourlay, chief executive of the health and beauty division of Alliance Boots, claims that these are difficult times for the high street, those with retail insurance policies may be interested to discover.
He asserts: "Clearly these are challenging times for many UK high streets. We support the BRC report which, if delivered, will maintain and strengthen high streets' vitality and viability."
Stephen Robertson, director general of the BRC, also emphasised the difficulty of the problems that these stores and all retail insurance policy holders face.
Recent figures published by CB Richard Ellis show that investment in central and eastern European commercial property has fallen by 91 per cent year-on-year.
