Shop fire highlights landlords' need for commercial property insurance
A serious accidental fire which destroyed a town centre shop in Croydon has brought home the importance of all landlords having adequate commercial property insurance cover.
The Croydon Advertiser reported that the fire, which ripped through the Wing Tai Supermarket in Church Street on Wednesday night, caused chaos as families were forced to evacuate their homes.
While no one was hurt in the blaze, which began at around 21:30 BST on Wednesday and continued until Thursday morning, the entire shop was gutted, highlighting to landlords the need for commercial property insurance.
Harvey Payne, manager of Croydon Fire Station's Red Watch, told the newspaper: "The fire appears to have begun on the bottom floor, in the shop and warehouse area. Because of this, our first action was to send crews into the flats above to make sure they were empty and clear of people."
Earlier this week, a spate of arson attacks in the north west of England, some of which had affected commercial property insurance customers, were reported by Bolton News, further emphasising the importance of cover.
