Small changes 'could reduce household bills'
Making small changes to rental properties could make utility bills thousands of pounds cheaper meaning they are more attractive to potential tenants, it has been claimed.
According to Friends of the Earth, people who are concerned about rising bills can save money by making homes more eco-friendly.
She commented that significant amounts of money could be saved by updating the household boiler to a more efficient model or installing better insulation in cavity walls or the roof to exclude drafts.
The National Home Improvement council agreed, pointing out that changing lightbulbs to energy-saving versions can save £60 each over their lifetimes.
Caroline Rams from the Energy Saving Trust added that landlords who change an old fridge-freezer to a more efficient model could save £34 a year.
If everyone in the country replaced all of their cold appliances - including fridges, freezers and fridge-freezers - the country would save £700 million in energy bills each year, the expert said.
