South-west homes hit by flooding
People in south Somerset have been evacuated from their homes after torrential rain sparked flash flooding across the area last night.
Hundreds of properties are believed to have been damaged by the downpour, with clean-up operations already underway this morning.
These floods are different from last summer's, however, as they were "gone almost as quickly as they came," a spokesman for Devon and Somerset fire services said.
He said it was a "typical flash flood" and that it "quietened down considerably overnight".
The spokesman added: "It's very different from what happened in Gloucestershire because that built up for many days.
"This was literally that tremendous amount of water came down with very little warning and the surface drainage couldn't handle it."
It was revealed recently that thousands of families have still not returned to their homes after the flooding last summer.
The government confirmed 5,650 households are not fully back in their houses.
