Students 'unaware' of dangers posed by household emergencies
Increased awareness among students is needed into how to be safe in their rented accommodation, an expert has said.
Sarah Harris, speaking for National Grid, emphasised the need for young tenants to educate themselves on the issues of carbon monoxide poisoning and gas safety.
Ms Harris compared the issue to having a car put through its MOT, that inspections need to be carried out in the home too.
"The advice is simple - if you are living in rented accommodation please make sure you speak to your landlord and make sure the gas boiler has been checked and maintained," she remarked.
Joining the National Grid representative in the campaign was actor James Sutton - who portrays Jean-Paul McQueen in Channel 4's soap opera Hollyoaks.
He highlighted the excitement students generally feel when they fly the nest, having played one himself in the show, that "the last thing that is on your mind is gas safety and looking after yourself in the home".
Research from the National Grid recently revealed 76 per cent of students do not know how to turn gas off at the mains.
