Tenants contents insurance quotes 'subject to postcode effect'
Written by Michael Brown
Tenants contents insurance quotes are directly affected by postcodes, which are used by providers to create a picture of the house or flat and the risks it might face, according to an expert.
Rebecca Atkinson, writing for Moneywise, says that renters can use this information to try and improve tenants contents insurance rates and should consider it when buying a policy.
She recommends that renters make sure they are on the electoral register, as providers often check credit records before approving contents insurance.
Ms Atkinson also suggests choosing accommodation which has a burglar alarm, or getting the landlord to fit one.
"You could also join a Neighbourhood Watch scheme," she advises.
Ms Atkinson recommends checking that locks have the British Standards Kitemark, indicating they conform to the insurance industry benchmark, as this could lower premiums.
Meanwhile, Ed Mead, director of Douglas Gordon, recently claimed that rents are beginning to stabilise in the London area.
