Buy to let property insurance customers given energy-saving tips
03 Sep 2010
Landlords and buy to let property insurance policyholders looking to improve the energy efficiency of their buildings should look at installing a new boiler and encouraging tenants to reduce their water consumption.
The comments come from the National Home Improvement Show after Sainsbury's Finance findings revealed that one-fifth of all personal loans taken out in the first half of 2010 were used to fund home improvements.
Michael Holmes, spokesperson for the National Home Improvement Show, said that buy to let property insurance customers looking to boost the energy efficiency of their lets should install a new boiler.
"Prices start from around £400 for a condensing boiler and [property owners] can choose from gas, electric or oil fired. Alternatively, buy a jacket for your boiler. It will save ten per cent on your energy bill and reduce the temperature on your boiler by one degree," he advised landlords.
The average value of loans taken out to pay for DIY projects were found to have increased by 12 per cent in the past 12 months, to £9,225.
