Commercial buildings insurance: Flooding in Reading
15 Jul 2010
Landlords could be encouraged to seek out commercial buildings insurance after a burst water main in Reading provided evidence of the dangers to property.
Wilderness Road, in Earley, had to be closed when water started to rush from the broken pipe, while Thames Water engineers quickly shut off the supply and dug up the road, they had to wait for the water to clear before repairing the damage.
Speaking to the BBC, a Thames Water spokeswoman said: "Fortunately we managed to stop the water ... so there was no internal flooding."
"There could be many reasons why the main has burst, anything from ground movement, traffic movements to temperature changes," she added.
The lack of a definitive answer shows that it could be a wise decision for landlords to take out property insurance.
The damage comes days after a fire ripped through London tower block in another stark warning to landlords about the need for property insurance. More than 100 firefighters were called to the blaze in Kingston-upon-Thames.
