London represents a 'safe bet' for property owners
22 Feb 2012
Investors are increasingly choosing London as the place to become property owners, largely on the basis that it is a good way of protecting capital.
That's the view of Ed Mead, director at Douglas & Gordon, who believes that increasingly owners and investors are looking to protect what capital they have rather than carrying lofty ambitions of returns.
He claimed that this is why central London property in particular has been such a prized asset during the recession, and especially recently, with people in the market to make good 'defensive plays'.
"Investments at the moment are not necessarily about getting an enormous rate of return; it is about not seeing your capital value being destroyed. That is the principal draw for central London property," said Mr Mead.
"You are buying because it is a very good defensive play."
Recently, Cluttons reported that sustained domestic and overseas demand for property in prime central London has caused a further 25 per cent drop in stock levels at the start of this year.
