NEAE urges rethink on empty high street premises
22 Feb 2012
The National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) has called on the government to consider using vacant high street properties to stem the housing problem in the UK.
According to the NAEA, empty buildings in high streets across the country could be converted into abodes to help people find accommodation, although a few points need to be considered.
The organisation recommends weighing up the cost of a conversion versus a new build as well as any changes that may be required to surrounding high street premises. Property insurance issues will also need to be well thought through.
Peter Bolton King, chief executive of the NAEA, said: "With the government still yet to formally respond to Mary Portas’ review of the high street, swift action from local authorities and forward-thinking developers is crucial to revive the UK’s town and city centres."
The NAEA also recommended owners check with the local authority before proceeding with any work of this type.
