Review of landlords and tenants launched
23 Jan 2008
The government has launched a study of the UK private rental sector in order to make the rental market easier to navigate for both landlords and tenants.
Julie Rugg and David Rhodes of the Centre for Housing Policy at York University will lead the review, which will focus on the quality of rental accommodation and the impact of growing numbers of buy-to-let landlords and student tenants.
Housing and planning minister Yvette Cooper said: "Most of us have rented a flat or house at some stage in our lives and the private rented sector is, at its best, a vital provider of good housing.
"But too few people are aware of their rights and responsibilities, either as tenants or landlords."
Last year the government introduced a safeguard for tenants, with a scheme that guaranteed tenants' deposits and gave them more rights to demand repairs.
According to the Citizens Advice Bureau, a fifth of tenants were dissatisfied with the repairs their landlord carried out.
